Every year, millions of people across the planet turn off the lights between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm on the last Saturday in March, this annual tradition known as ‘Earth Hour‘. The goal of this activity is to spread awareness about sustainability and climate change. This year Earth Hour was be held on March 27, 2021.
Mikiel Anton Vassalli College (MAVC) accepted to take part in this initiative and join millions of people around the world and switched off the façade’s lights in support of nature and our planet, and thus the colourful lights enlightening the façade of The Office of The Head of the College Network in Hamrun, Malta, were turned out on Saturday 27th between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm, as were other main government buildings across the islands.
In this way our college agreed with this year’s awareness campaign as explained by the Minister for the Environment, Climate Change, and Planning the Hon. Aaron Farrugia to make it: “Our collective duty to safeguard our environment, whereby a small effort by everyone results in major benefit.”
MAVC wanted to join other countries around the world to raise awareness on problems stemming from excessive and unsustainable energy consumption, which brings about many negative impacts including air pollution and waste of natural resources. Above all we want to show that our students, ranging from 4 year olds to adult ones, understand this year’s theme that was ‘Speak for Nature’, highlighting the need to be responsible for our environment which in the Hon Minister Farrugia’s words: “is one of the strongest mechanisms with which humans can combat the negative effects of climate change. If we do not safeguard our environment, ecosystems and everything else depending on it will fail.”
