CARE lessons at the School of Art

Art Tutors John Paul Muscat and Kamy Aquilina have just completed the multi-week implementation of CARE lesson plans during lessons with learners at MQF level 2 at the Mikiel Anton Vassalli College- Malta School of Art. Students aged 9 to 11 followed lessons in techniques and process of art whilst exploring and touching on topics such as sustainable lifestyles, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, and appreciation of cultural diversity.

Between December and February, both Art tutors, together with another 4 educators from the Malta School of art attended an online training course as part of the CARE project entitled: ‘Innovative Pedagogies in Visual Art Education and Sustainable Development’.

This Continuous Personal Development course was offered by the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta, giving educators the opportunity to further their knowledge in innovative pedagogies in visual art education and sustainable development. The course lectures were delivered by experts in the field, namely Profs. Raphael Vella, Dr Censu Caruana, Dr Isabelle Gatt and Dr Charmaine Zammit. The Educators were trained in art education strategies informed by knowledge, skills, attitudes and values of Education for Sustainable Development.

This course forms part of an Erasmus+ co-funded project called CARE (Connecting Art with Real Life issues), a joint venture between the University of Malta, the University of Exeter, Frederick University in Nicosia, Aristotle University in Thessaloniki and the European Regional Council of InSEA.

The MAVC – Malta School of Art is happy to have been involved in this project and would like to thank Mr Muscat and Ms Aquilina for their effort to implement the lessons learned during the CARE Project for the benefit of our students. Art and sustainable development are interlinked modes of social action, sharing significant concerns with social contexts
