Malta and Spain learners discuss together in a Dialogic Art Gathering

On 3rd of June 202, the Mikiel Anton Vasslli College Malta School of Art and I.E.S Alfonso II School in Ovieto, Spain participated in an online Transnational Art Gathering That brought together 30 Maltese and the Spanish learners as well as parents, tutors, members of stuff and community members of both schools. Umberto Buttigieg, Centre Administrator of the Malta School of Art kicked off the event by introducing the event and thanking all those that made this collaboration and e-twinning project between the Maltese and Spanish School possible. Ms Pilar Fernandez, English Literature tutor at I.E.S Alfonso II School moderated both sessions of the Dialogic Art Gathering, starting by explaining how the artworks that were going to be discussed where chosen through a voting poll by students ages 12 to 15 attending both schools.

The first painting was The Beheading, by Caravaggio. Many participants took part and shared their views about the painting. Remarks were various, but also included the chiaroscuro technique and the emotions portrayed by the main characters. Some participants also remarked that apart from the old lady all the other characters seem to be witnessing an everyday situation and not a killing.

The session than moved on to discuss the second slide: Las Meninas by Velasquez. Again, many were those that put their views forward. Even the younger students commented; especially about the clothes and the other children on the canvas. Other participants remarked about the dog being the faithful symbol linked to the intimacy of the painting.

Ms Fernandez gave the concluding remarks, thanking all those who participated in this gathering.
