Achieving Diploma in the Visual and Performing Arts

A graduation ceremony for the first cohort of students attending the Mikiel Anton Vassalli College (MAVC) and who have successfully completed their studies in the last academic year and obtained the level 5 Diploma took place on Friday 15th November 2019.

Performing Arts Education in Malta and Gozo. These include the Malta School of Art, the Malta School of Drama and Dance, the Malta School of Music as well as the Gozo and Malta Visual and Performing Arts Schools. Around 4,000 learners are currently registered in these schools with nearly 200 Teachers and Educators with passion for the education of arts.

This symbolic ceremony attended by the Minister for Education and Employment Hon Evarist Bartolo also include a number of performances and presentations by the graduating students.

The event included presentations and performances from the learners themselves:
Maria Eleonora Zammit, Suzanna Marie Bezzina and Marisa Galea reached MQF Level 5 (Higher Diploma) in Classical Voice Performance. Celine Schembri also reached Level 5 in Musicology together with Sarah Agius who achieved this level in Pianoforte Performance. All 5 graduates, studied at the Malta School of Music.

Gozitan learners Chantel Mercieca and Maria Refalo attending the Gozo Visual and Performing Arts School reached Level 4 in Music Knowledge & Understanding.

From the Malta School of Drama and Dance, both Amy Schembri and Darren Sciberras reached MQF level 4 in Flamenco and Musical Theater respectively. Lilyana Tranulova, another student attending the College achieved the Diploma in Visual Art from the Malta School of Art.

College Principal Mr Victor Galea explained that, following this successful event, the College added another benchmark for success criteria. Besides the continuous increase of registered students in these specialized schools – which fees are highly subsidized by the state – “We need to see that the percentage of those who actually start and complete a study in any of the disciplines in the visual and performing arts needs to increase as well“.

A diploma or MQF Level 5 is the highest qualification offered right now at the Mikiel Anton Vassalli College.
