The production ‘Ġawhar Misjub – an Operatic Banquet’ includes operatic excerpts by different Maltese composers highlighting Malta’s rich heritage in operatic music. In this article one can learn more about the composer Luigi Vella (1868-1950).
Luigi Vella (1868-1950) was the second son of the Vella family of composers. He was taught music by his father, Dr Giuseppe Vella (1827-1912) who was known in Malta at the time. Following the footsteps of his father and his other brothers, Luigi Vella made a great contribution in the local musical field.
He served several times as Maestro di Cappella of the Cathedral, a testament of the great trust his father showed in him and also of Bishop Mgr. Peter Pace, who chose him as a worthy replacement of his late father. The quantity of wonderful music which today is conserved in the archives of the Cathedral Museum at Mdina is also a showcase of this composer’s abilities.
‘Ġawhar Misjub – An Operatic Banquet’ will premier on the 27th of May 8 pm at St.Agatha Auditorium , Rabat.
