International Masterclasses at the School of Music in November

The School of Music is proud and honoured to welcome four international musicians who will be visiting our school during the month of November, and they have all kindly offered varied masterclass opportunities for our students.


1. Dr Sarah Kim (USA): Mindful Practice Lecture

Dr Sarah Kim, professor of Cello at Miami University will be giving a presentation for all advanced musicians about effective practice strategies. This talk will be held in the Poulenc Room at the Malta School of Music, on Monday 6th of November between 4:00pm – 5:30pm. The presentation is aimed for our Diploma students, but all  advanced students (Grade 7+) are strongly encouraged to attend. Adult learners who are keen to apply mindfulness to their music practice are also welcome to attend.


2. Alan Rafferty (USA): Cello Technique Class

Cellist Alan Rafferty, Artistic Director of Cincinnati Young Artists and Cello Professor at University of Cincinnati, will be leading two sessions dedicated to young and more advanced cellists. This class is open for all string players. Cellists are requested to bring their instrument with them, and will participate actively in the class. The other string players will be passive participants and will only observe.

Cellists Grade 1 – 5 Technique Class: Monday 6th November, 4:00pm – 4:40pm

Cellists Grades 6 – 8 Technique Class: Monday 6th November, 4:45pm – 5:30pm

3. Sebastian Gokus (Germany): Percussion Masterclass

Percussionist and Pedagogue, Sebastian Gokus, will be in Malta as part of the International Organ Festival and will be offering a masterclass for our students on Monday 20th of November. Students who would like to participate actively by performing during this class, please discuss with your teacher and send in your repertoire by now later than Thursday 16th November. All percussion students are encourage to attend as passive participants.

4. Monica Kammerlander (Austria): Violin Masterclass

Also in Malta as part of the International Organ Festival, Violinist Monica Kammerlander will be leading offering masterclasses for our students on Monday 27th of November. Students who would like to participate actively by performing during this class, please discuss with your teacher and send in your repertoire by not later than Thursday 23rd of November. All percussion students are encourage to attend as passive participants.


The School of Music is extending the opportunity to participate in these masterclasses to students at the Malta Visual and Performing Arts School and the Malta Youth Orchestra.
