The Mikiel Anton Vassalli College – Malta School of Art is honoured to announce the generous donation of a lovely painting by the artist Joseph Aquilina (1934-2021).
This oil painting was generously gifted by his daughter Ms Christine Grech.
Joseph (also known as Giuseppe) Aquilina was mentored at the School of Art. His main art tutors were renowned artists such as Ċensu Apap, Carmenu Mangion and Ġuzeppi Caruana.
His works consist of portraits and figures mostly found in private collections in Malta, Canada and Australia.
This artwork, which will now form part of the school collection, is an oil painting on board, dated 1962. It shows the artist at work, at his easel in his studio. It is a self-portrait of the artist, representing himself painting a farmhouse. The work is an intimate glimpse into the artist’s world and sheds light on his studio where a few canvases await the painterly touch.
