Continuing with the introduction of the seamstresses; here is the Head of Wardrobe for Blat – The Island Fortress opera-film!
SEAMSTRESS/HEAD OF WARDROBE
Sarah Grech‘s role in the opera started as a seamstress and developed into a stylist as well as a head of wardrobe during filming. She made 3 costumes in total; one for Lucy on her way to the opera, one for the character of ix- Xih, and one for Death. During filming, Grech was making sure each and every costume was well steamed, cleaned and sitting right on the actor. She was also in charge of any alterations that needed to be done both on and off set.
Grech graduated from University of Leeds with a Masters degree in Performance Design. She also studied Theatre Studies (Hons) and read for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Drama. She has been involved in theatre from a young age, yet her heart was always in backstage work. She started off as a dresser for local productions including pantomime, opera and musicals, whilst also taking on roles such as Stage Manager, Props Manager and Assistant Stage Manager. After teaching for a few years, Grech focused more on her passion for costumes and is now the Wardrobe Supervisor at Teatru Malta. She also works freelance as a seamstress and head of wardrobe for various productions.
