Voice Masterclasses Enrich Opera TRAB – The Rest is Dust at MAVC

As part of the creative development of the upcoming opera TRAB – The Rest is Dust, a series of voice masterclasses were held this week at the Malta School of Music, part of the Mikiel Anton Vassalli College (MAVC).

These exclusive sessions were open to vocal students with a passion for performance and were led by a distinguished lineup of soloists — all of whom are also featured in the opera’s cast. The masterclasses provided a rare opportunity for young singers to work directly with internationally acclaimed artists, gaining first-hand insight into vocal technique, interpretation, and performance skills.

Featured Voice Masters & Areas of Expertise

Olivia Le Roux – French Mélodie Specialist
Students submitted repertoire in advance for focused feedback on interpretation and vocal nuance.

Camilla Davies – Performance Technique and Stage Skills
Drawing from her extensive experience in German and English repertoire, as well as contemporary music, Camilla guided participants through stage presence and technical precision.

Steffen Schantz – German Repertoire, Operetta & Lied
Steffen’s session explored the emotional depth and structural elements of these genres, helping students refine stylistic delivery.

Gheorghe Palcu – Italian, French, and English Repertoire
Gheorghe emphasized a holistic vocal approach, exploring how posture and physical awareness influence the vocal process.

These masterclasses are part of the educational arm of TRAB – The Rest is Dust, reflecting MAVC’s mission to bridge professional artistic practice with student development. By bringing students into the heart of the creative process, MAVC continues to invest in nurturing the next generation of performers.

Upcoming Session: Stage Direction with Michael Moxham

Next up in the masterclass series is a session led by the opera’s director, Mr. Michael Moxham, who will focus on Stage Direction — offering further insights into the staging and dramatic elements of operatic performance.  This will be on 26^th April.
