MAVC Organising Masterclasses in Stage Management and Set Design

As part of the ongoing preparations for the highly anticipated opera TRAB – The Rest is Dust, the Mikiel Anton Vassalli College (MAVC) has launched a dynamic series of masterclasses designed to give students valuable, hands-on experience in professional theatrical practice.

Led by renowned industry professionals who are actively contributing to the production, these sessions offer students direct access to expert knowledge across various disciplines. More than just technical training, this initiative fosters a deeper understanding of the creative process behind a major operatic production.

Over the past week, two key masterclasses took place at the MAVC, Malta School of Drama and Dance and the MAVC, Malta School of Art, offering focused, practical instruction:

Stage Management with Mr. Marco Mallia

Held at the Malta School of Drama and Dance, this session delved into the core responsibilities of a stage manager — from coordinating cast and crew to ensuring seamless backstage operations. Mr. Mallia provided students with real-world strategies for managing complex live performances with professionalism and precision.

Set Design & Projections with Mr. George Mario Attard and Mr. Fabrizio Ellul

At the Malta School of Art, students explored the artistic and technical elements of set design, with a special emphasis on the use of projections to enhance visual storytelling. This collaborative session introduced innovative ways to transform stage space and create immersive environments.

All participating students are also maintaining a Reflective Journal throughout the process — a tool that encourages self-assessment and critical engagement with the material covered in each session.

These masterclasses mark a key phase in the lead-up to TRAB – The Rest is Dust — a bold and visionary production that highlights the creativity and commitment of MAVC’s students and educators.
