Visual Exhibition at the Malta School of Art: SoA Students Bring College Production Opera “TRAB” to Life with Striking Visuals

The School of Art recently concluded a series of work that saw its talented students collaborate with their dedicated art educators to create the captivating visuals for the MAVC College Production Opera titled “Trab.” This year’s production was particularly significant as it presented an opera in Maltese, penned by George Peresso with a musical score by Reuben Pace, forming part of a larger trilogy.

The artistic journey undertaken by the school of art students involved a thematic exploration into the opera’s narrative. Through a series of sessions, the students brainstormed ideas, translating their initial concepts into sketches and drawings. These preliminary explorations then blossomed into detailed drawings and vibrant paintings, each designed to enhance the emotional depth and storytelling of the storyline.

This creative process also necessitated a keen eye for stylization and adaptation, ensuring the imagery would translate effectively when projected onto the stage. Art educators Fabrizio Ellul and George Mario Attard guided this crucial phase, lending their technical expertise to bring the students’ artistic visions to life through animated projection, transforming the still images into interactive dynamic images.

Adding another layer of appreciation for the students’ hard work was the setup of a pop-up exhibition which was carefully curated by art educator Leanne Lewis, with the invaluable assistance of Sephora Borg, George Mario Attard, and other dedicated teachers. The exhibition presented a selection of students’ artwork, offering a better picture of the creative process that underpinned the opera’s visual landscape.

This collaborative endeavour not only provided invaluable practical experience for the School of Art students but also fostered a unique connection between the visual and performing arts, enriching the overall impact of the MAVC College production. The dedication and creativity displayed by both the students and their educators truly gave the production a truly colourful and dynamic dimension.

The collection of artworks produced by the students will be exhibited at the MAVC Malta School of Art from 6th May till 12th May. Exhibition viewing hours: 9:00-13:00 and 16:00 -19:00hrs.
