In the Mikiel Anton Vassalli College (MAVC) annual live production L-AĦĦAR BASTIMENT – Stories from the Grand Harbour, choreographer Diane Portelli contributes a powerful movement language that captures the emotional depth of Malta’s maritime stories through dance.
Portelli began her dance journey at the age of three, training at the Tanya Bayona Princess Poutiatine Academy of Ballet, where she studied classical ballet, modern, contemporary dance and flamenco. She later joined The Dance Workshop, where she is now a part-time tutor and choreographer. Her talent and dedication were recognised through prestigious awards, including the Luisello Award for Spanish Dance and the Duke of Ellington Award for Modern Dance.
Portelli further developed her artistic training internationally in Pavia, participating in workshops with leading contemporary dance companies such as Random Dance Company, Ultima Vez, and Hofesh Shechter Company. She also represented Malta at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood, where she won two gold medals alongside fellow dancers under the guidance of Janet Vella. Her choreographic work has also been recognised at a national level. In 2020, she created her first piece for ŻfinMalta National Dance Company, Shades of Perception, which premiered to critical acclaim. Academically, Portelli holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from the University of Malta, together with professional qualifications in modern theatre from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.
Since joining Moveo Dance Company in 2013, she has grown from dancer to choreographer and director, performing in numerous productions both locally and internationally. In 2018, she was awarded Artist of the Year at the Premju għall-Arti Awards, together with Dorian Mallia, marking an important recognition of her contribution to the Maltese dance scene.
In L-AĦĦAR BASTIMENT– Stories from the Grand Harbour, Portelli’s choreography forms an integral part of the production’s multidisciplinary narrative. Through expressive movement and ensemble work, the dancers embody the human experiences connected to Malta’s maritime past — moments of struggle, resilience, loss and hope. Her choreography interacts closely with the music, visual projections and theatrical elements of the production, transforming historical memory into a living and emotional stage experience.
The performance will take place on Saturday 9th May 2026 at St. Agatha Auditorium, Rabat.
