Echoes of the Grand Harbour: Stories of Courage and Memory

The Mikiel Anton Vassalli College (MAVC) presents its 2026 artistic production L-AĦĦAR BASTIMENT– Stories from the Grand Harbour, a multidisciplinary performance that brings to life powerful historical and imaginary events connected to Malta’s Grand Harbour. Through theatre, music, dance and visual storytelling, the production gives voice to stories of courage, sacrifice, tragedy and national resilience.

Among the historical narratives explored in the production is the tragedy of the Um El Faroud, the Libyan tanker that exploded at the Malta Drydocks on 3 February 1995, claiming the lives of nine dock workers and leaving a lasting mark on Malta’s maritime history. Today, the wreck rests off Wied iż-Żurrieq and remains an important memorial site honouring the workers who lost their lives.

The production also recalls the story of the Polish warship ORP Kujawiak, which sank in June 1942 during Operation Harpoon while assisting another vessel approaching Malta under siege. The ship’s loss and the sacrifice of its crew remain a powerful reminder of Malta’s role during the Second World War.

Another key story featured is that of the tanker SS Ohio, whose heroic arrival during Operation Pedestal in August 1942 brought vital fuel supplies that helped Malta survive wartime shortages. Despite severe damage from enemy attacks, the tanker reached the Grand Harbour, becoming a lasting symbol of courage and international cooperation.

The performance also reflects on Sette Giugno, the historic events of 7 June 1919 when Maltese citizens lost their lives while demanding political and social rights. The tragedy became a turning point in Malta’s constitutional history and remains a defining moment in the nation’s journey towards self-government.

Together, these stories form a powerful narrative where history becomes human, reminding audiences that behind every historic event there are lives, voices and memories that continue to shape our identity.

The performance will take place on Saturday 9th May 2026 at St. Agatha Auditorium, Rabat.
