A Legacy in Clay: Theuma Family Donates Gino Theuma Sculptures to MAVC Malta School of Art

The MAVC Malta School of Art is honoured to acknowledge a generous donation by the Theuma family, consisting of a collection of clay statues and maquettes created by former student Gino Theuma. This meaningful contribution strengthens the School’s role not only as a place of learning, but also as a guardian of Malta’s artistic heritage.

Gino Theuma (1935–2020) was a distinguished Maltese photographer and artist whose creative life spanned multiple disciplines. Although widely recognised for his documentary photography—capturing significant cultural and historical moments both locally and abroad—sculpture remained at the heart of his artistic identity. It was during his formative years at the Malta School of Art that he developed his sculptural skills, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to craftsmanship and visual storytelling.

The donated works reflect this dedication. Theuma produced an extensive body of sculptural pieces over the years, including thousands of clay figures depicting scenes from Maltese history. His maquettes and statues are marked by careful attention to detail and a deep appreciation for narrative, embodying both technical skill and cultural memory. These works now return to the institution where his artistic journey began, creating a powerful continuity between past and present.

Beyond sculpture, Theuma’s career in photography brought him into contact with notable international events and figures. From documenting Royal Marine Commandos in Libya in the 1950s to covering historic meetings such as that between Mikhail Gorbachev and George Bush off the coast of Malta, his lens captured moments of global significance. At the same time, his collaborations with Maltese artists and institutions reflect his strong ties to the local creative community.

This donation ensures that Gino Theuma’s legacy will continue to inspire new generations of students. His work stands as a testament to the value of artistic exploration across disciplines and the importance of preserving cultural narratives through art. The MAVC Malta School of Art expresses its sincere gratitude to the Theuma family for this thoughtful gesture, which enriches the School’s collection and reinforces its mission to celebrate and sustain Malta’s artistic traditions.
